The ABI has warned that damage caused by the gales across the UK over the weekend could cost up to £50m to repair.

An ABI spokesman said: "We are talking tens of millions of pounds in the level of claims - but only up to £50m - rather than hundreds of millions."

The gales also prompted a barrage of calls into AA Insurance Services' Claimline department.

GAB Robins said its loss teams were mobilised to deal with claims incurred at the weekend.

"Our major and complex loss team has been instrumental in ensuring that businesses are back in operation in a short space of time, and business interruption minimised." a spokewoman said.

GAB Robins has dealt with several hundred claims so far.
