Andrew Torrance of Allianz Cornhill expresses a degree of puzzlement about the reported drop in business in his firm's personal lines division (News, 17 November).

Your quotation says the "drop in business was not caused by underwriting indiscipline".

We, as brokers who use his company, would probably agree. But we would also probably comment that levels of competence may play some small part in the equation.

There are many very able individuals who work hard for Allianz Cornhill, but this is a company which also heavily endorses an in-house underwriting academy which is no doubt excellent in many respects.
