The gales and heavy rain that battered Wales and the West Country on Friday and over the weekend appear to have let businesses of light.

Chartered Institute of Loss Adjusters area representative John Farthing said: "Its too early to know what the full extent of the flood damage is.

"All the main loss adjusting firms in the region have been put on full alert but the first indications are that there will be a lot of small domestic rather than any significant commercial claims.

"Over the last three years we have got quite used to floods in the region and therefore all the firms have quite well rehearsed contingency plans."

Meanwhile, a 6,400-tonne cargo ship that ran aground in high seas of the coast of Cornwall will not be refloated until at least Wednesday.

The recovery is being hampered by severe weather warnings, which are in force for the next two days.

The Maltese-registered Kodima was carrying a cargo of timber from Sweden to Libya.

The Independent reported that police were called to the beach where it ran aground to deter locals from taking lengths of wood washed ashore from the vessel.
