Willis is to create regional sales teams to boost its share of the £1bn UK professional indemnity (PI) market.

Trevor Moss, who was recently recruited from Alexander Forbes, said that while Willis' PI expertise is currently concentrated in London and Ipswich at the moment, as insurers created offices in the regions, Willis would create sales PI sales in its regional offices.

Moss, executive director of Willis' financial and professional services, said that it would be difficult to create these teams in time to meet solicitors' PI renewals on 1October, when over 10,000 practices renew their insurance on the same day.

But Moss said that he was trying to create new products in time for the renewals that could be sold through existing channels including the Willis Commercial Network.

"We may not get the products in place by the right time due to circumstances beyond our control, such as Law Society approval," said Moss.

He promised a number of new solutions to differentiate Willis from its rivals Marsh, Alexander Forbes and Aon.

"All I can say about electronic delivery of PI is ‘watch this space,'" said Moss.

He added that Willis, which is reckoned to have about 5% of the UK PI market, would be targeting the media and technology sectors.

"There are some huge IT infrastructure projects out there - some of the biggest contracts around. Their requirements are changing and it is a big opportunity," said Moss.

He added that technology and media products have been grouped together and that there was mileage to be gained by treating each sector in its own right.
