One in four callers to the Halifax General Insurance legal expenses claims hotline were seeking advice about employment issues, said Halifax Home Insurance.

It said the most likely place a customer would encounter a legal dispute is at work. Issues such as discrimination, working hours, dismissal, and health and safety are common causes of claims, said the company.

It said the number of calls received relating to work is four times the number received over boundary or building disputes, and double the number of calls relating to personal injuries or to consume complaints.

Halifax General Insurance chief executive Howard Posner, said: “We live in a society that increasingly looks towards litigation to solve problems. Legal expenses cover allows our customers to defend themselves or anyone in their household through the correct legal channels with peace of mind.

“We always think that incidents such as being discriminated against at work, having a tradesman leave your kitchen in an unusable state or your neighbour encroaching onto your land will happen to someone else, but the fact is that these are scenarios that occur every day and fighting these is a costly experience.”

He added: “Employment disputes can be extremely traumatic for the individuals concerned so it is important that people are protected against the costs involved to avoid further stress at what can already be a very difficult time.”
