Zurich has begun a review of the legal firms it uses on all its panels. The insurer hopes to complete the review by September.

Around 30 firms which support its general insurance business received a letter from head of claims Bill Paton three weeks ago.

A Zurich spokeswoman said: "We outlined the nature of the review and asked for their input and support. This will be invaluable in terms of confirming current processes as well as developing ideas for the future.

"So far as legal services are concerned, we know we need to work closely with our legal partners if we are to control claims costs, while delivering a consistent level of service to the business."
