Zurich has appointed Cecile Fresneau as chief underwriting officer for UK general insurance.

Fresneau has worked for Zurich in Switzerland since 2011 and is currently head of personal lines for Europe, Middle East and Africa.

Zurich said Fresneau would bring a wide range of underwriting, pricing and business strategy experience when she joins the UK business on 1 June.

She fills the role vacated by Tim Holliday in December, when he was appointed managing director of Zurich’s UK personal lines business.

The position had been held on an interim basis by Zurich Municipal head of underwriting Anne Griffiths. She will resume her role when Fresneau joins.

Before joining Zurich, Fresneau worked for Insurance Australia Group (IAG) in Sydney, where she lived for 18 years.

She will report to UKGI chief executive Steve Lewis, who said: “We are delighted to welcome Cecile to the business.

“She has successfully shaped the long-term global strategy and portfolio for Zurich personal lines, and our pricing and underwriting capabilities, and brings a diverse perspective that will be invaluable to UKGI.”

Zurich’s UK general insurance business made a £144m operating profit in 2013 and improved its combined operating ratio by four percentage points to 95.8%
