Last week's cyclone in Australia has caused insured losses of at least A$250m (£100m).

According to the country's Insurance Disaster Response Organisation (IDRO), Cyclone Larry's devastating impact on far north Queensland has led to 12,500 insurance claims so far.

As UK insurers release financial statements badly affected by the 2005 hurricane season, this illustrates the ongoing cost of extreme weather-related activity to the industry.

IDRO state coordinator for Queensland, Graham Jones, indicated that losses are expected to increase as loss adjustors manage to access more isolated properties.

Cyclone Larry has caused the ninth-largest insurance bill in Australian history.

The 2025 Insurance Times Awards took place on the evening of Wednesday 3rd December in the iconic Great Room of London’s Grosvenor House.

Hosted by comedian and actor Tom Allen, 34 Gold, 23 Silver and 22 Bronze awards were handed out across an amazing 34 categories recognising brilliance and innovation right across the breadth of UK general insurance.
Many congratulations to all the worthy winners and as always, huge thanks to our sponsors for their support and our judges for their expertise.
