Gibraltar-based online motor insurer 1st Central has promoted Andy James to chief executive of its UK business, First Central Insurance Management.

He will take up the new position in addition to his current role as group marketing director.

James joined the group in August 2012 from Allianz UK, where he headed the direct motor and home business.

Group chief executive and founder Ken Acott, who was previously also chief executive of the UK business, has now become UK chairman.

He will continue to be “deeply involved” in the UK business, the company said.

The company added that the new structure would help in its goal of growing market share in 2013.

James said: “This is an exciting opportunity to help shape the 1st Central business as we move into our next phase of growth. Insurance is all about selling and delivering on a promise, and it is great to be given the opportunity to ensure we can become a more marketing-led organisation.”

Acott added: “Andy’s vision, leadership and industry experience will contribute enormously to our business momentum. We have ambitious plans in the coming year and Andy is well placed to drive the business forward towards its strategic goals.”
