Company history:
MAAF Assurances SA was established in 1992 as a result of a restructuring of the parent company MAAF Assurances.
The parent was formed in 1950 as the Mutuelle Assurance Automobile des Artisans de France (MAAAF) underwrote its first motor insurance policies in 1951.
The formation of MAAAF was part of the post-war acceleration in the development of mutual motor insurers in France, which had been delayed by the Second World War. In 1961 MAAAF was renamed Mutual Assurance Artisanale de France, following the introduction of non-motor insurance products.
The restructuring in 1992 resulted in the principle personal lines business being transferred out of the mutual into MAAF SA. The aim was to facilitate the selling of insurance products to the General public. Meanwhile the mutual parent continued to provide personal and commercial lines and products to professionals.
