The ABI and Motor Insurers Bureau (MIB) have joined forces to call on the government to bring down the levels of uninsured driving.

An announcement today said proposals for speedier updating of information onto the Motor Insurance Database (MID) would have a major impact on tackling uninsured drivers.

The ABI and MIB proposed that motor insurance details for private motor business should be updated onto the database within seven days rather than the current 14 day requirement.

Fleet vehicles will continue to have to meet the existing targets.

BIBA and the Association of Chief Police Officers have added their backing to the campaign.

“We believe this new requirement will help deliver Professor Greenaway's vision of driving the uninsured from our roads”, said ABI's head of motor insurance and risk pricing Justin Jacobs.

Jacobs also called on the government to “create the new offence of keeping a vehicle on-the-road without insurance.”
