Reports of motor claims up 75% on last year

Sub-zero temperatures and snow blizzards across the country last week sparked a surge in claims and calls for help.

AXA-owned motor insurer Swiftcover said claims were up 75% last week, compared to the same period last year.

Director of claims Robin Reames said: “The severity of the snow this week caught many people by surprise and resulted in lots of drivers having accidents and problems with their cars. ARAG Legal Services said calls for emergency home assistance were 25% above normal levels for this time of year.

The majority of callers were requesting help for boiler breakdowns and burst pipes.

ARAG sales manager Andy Talbot said: “Boiler breakdowns are the most common problem, and being without heating and hot water can be extreme hardship, especially for the elderly.”
