The insurance industry recorded the lowest level of aviation losses in 2004, a report by Aon said.

Aon's 2004 Airline Insurance Market Review said losses were at the lowest level despite growing concerns about the potential severity of claims.

During the 1990s an average of 22 losses per year was recorded. In 2004 this number fell to just 15.

Though there were fewer losses, the total loss in 2004 showed a slight increase to $1bn.

Aon said while the introduction of safety initiatives are reducing the number of incidents, the cumulative cost of those incidents to the insurance industry is on the rise.
