I read that AXA is to close the office at Preston which brings back memories of its opening and success.

Guardian Assurance was advised by its Manchester manager that there was insufficient business in north Lancashire and Cumberland to warrant a branch office.

Along with him I prospected for site. Soon an office was established in Winckley Square under Ted Davies and we passed all the insurance in the area from Manchester to Preston.

Manchester made up the loss of income in under two years and Preston flourished too - probably Garratt Son & Flowerden was its largest account. Its staff came to Guardian Manchester for training. Happy days.
