One company had its own method of managing the risk of excessive alcohol consumption before the Association of Insurance and Risk Managers' annual dinner last week.
Upon entering the Royal Lancaster Hotel, guests looked around for the usual complimentary drinks tray and Backchat was among many who spied a small bar, replete with bartender.
One guest was seen to make for a "complimentary" glass, only to be confronted by an irate man in a suit, snarling: "This is a private bar" and whisking the drinks out of his reach.
A small sign said Innogy plc, but any idea that the energy company was generously quenching guests' thirst before dinner was very mistaken.
Backchat couldn't help but admire the firm's resolve not to let the assembled guests get too drunk. Risk management at its finest.
