The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has welcomed the launch of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office's (FCO) Know Before You Go campaign to encourage people to take out adequate travel insurance.

ABI director general Mary Francis said being well prepared for travel provided comfort when on holiday.

FCO research has shown that 23% of travellers experienced what they described as a “major problem” while abroad but that 15% never took out travel insurance, which equated to eight million uninsured trips each year.

The research also showed that 70% of travellers did not research their destination before departure and 54% of travellers who were aware of potential risks relied solely on word of mouth for more information.
