Transport Secretary Stephen Byers has resigned from his post.

In a news conference earlier today Byers said resigning was the "right thing to do" for the government.

This follows months of pressure following his move to put Railtrack into administration, him standing by Jo Moore after she used the World Trade Centre attacks to "bury" bad news and various allegations of lying.

Prime Minister Tony Blair said he "understood and respected" Byers' decision.
