Capita is in discussions with Digilog with a view to using voice stress analysis (VSA) technology to screen personal lines claims.

A source close to Digilog confirmed this week that the VSA specialists were in negotiations with Capita. Capita has a £30m deal with Abbey to run claims and administration on its insurance book, which includes home and motor policies.

It is not known whether Capita would use the technology to screen customers making claims on Abbey policies. Several leading insurers - including Admiral, Allianz Cornhill, Cox, HBOS, Highway and Royal & Sun Allianz - have piloted the Digilog system.

In October 2003, Admiral disclosed the results of a pilot it ran on motor theft claims. During the trial, around 20% of motor theft claimants withdrew their claim after being assessed by the VSA technology.
