Ian Chippendale, non-executive chairman of RBS Insurance will retire at the end of this year after more than 10 years with Privilege, Direct Line and RBS Insurance.

Mark Fisher, chief executive of the Royal Bank of Scotland Group's manufacturing division, will take over as chairman from 1 January 2007 in addition to his current responsibilities.

Annette Court, chief executive of RBS Insurance said: "I would like to thank Ian for the huge contribution he has made over the years to our growth, development and success. I also want to thank him for all the personal support he has given me and the executive team over the many years that we have worked together. We all wish him a long and happy retirement."

Ian joined Direct Line in 1996 from Privilege Insurance where he had been chief executive since the company's formation in 1994.

In 1997, Ian became chief executive of the Direct Line Group and he was appointed executive chairman in 2001.

Following the Royal Bank of Scotland Group's acquisition of Churchill Insurance and the formation of RBS Insurance in 2003, Ian was appointed Executive Chairman of RBS Insurance.
