Williams and Doswell pick up President’s Awards at annual conference

Two famous figures from insurance and financial services were honoured at the Chartered Insurance Institute’s (CII) annual Network Conference.

Dr Peter Williams and Graham Doswell both picked up a President’s Award at the event held on Thursday 14 June. The presentation was made during a drinks reception hosted by the Lord Hunt of the Wirral at the House of Lords.

The President’s Award recognises those who have devoted a significant part of their working lives to the service of the profession and the CII, and whose contribution has helped to shape the modern insurance institute. In 2012 just two individuals were honoured from the CII’s 105,000 members.

The first holder of a professional doctorate in financial services in the UK, Williams received the award for his role in helping to shape the CII. He was responsible for the formation of the Personal Finance Society and has served as both founder director and vice-president. He has also authored several books.

The award was made to Doswell for his professional and voluntary achievements. He has been a CII member for 50 years and in that time has enjoyed a number of roles, including a term as vice-president. He also sat on the board for the Association of British Insurers, and was the insurance company sector’s representative on the Financial Services Authority’s smaller business practitioner panel.

CII chief executive Dr Alexander Scott said: “To receive the President’s Award is a great privilege. The award honours only those who have made outstanding individual achievements throughout their career and worked tirelessly to enrich the profession in their local institute and beyond. Congratulations go to both Peter and Graham for all their efforts.”

Other awards bestowed on the night include the Exceptional Service Award, which recognises CII members who have made a significant contribution to the sector, locally, regionally or nationally. The winners included:

  • Colin McFarlin (Brighton)
  • David Sales (London)
  • Stuart Robertshaw (Leeds)
  • Veronica Wilkinson (York)

Two Silver Salvers were also presented to the Insurance Institute of Brighton and the Insurance Institute of Sheffield to celebrate both reaching their centenary year.
