Insurers' exposure to the massive blackout across North America last week is still unknown as the industry waits for investigators to identify the cause.

But the power cuts will spark business interruption claims worth millions of dollars, according to sources.

And if power companies are found to be negligent, costs to insurers could be much higher.

Both industry and service sectors on the US north-east coast and in Canada were affected.

General Motors closed 17 of its North American plants, British Airways was forced to cancel nine transatlantic flights and many shops and restaurants had to dump food stocks.

The 2025 Insurance Times Awards took place on the evening of Wednesday 3rd December in the iconic Great Room of London’s Grosvenor House.

Hosted by comedian and actor Tom Allen, 34 Gold, 23 Silver and 22 Bronze awards were handed out across an amazing 34 categories recognising brilliance and innovation right across the breadth of UK general insurance.
Many congratulations to all the worthy winners and as always, huge thanks to our sponsors for their support and our judges for their expertise.
