Temperatures will not rise above zero until middle of January

Richard Young, chief forecaster at the Met Office has warned of freezing winds keeping temperatures below zero through the weekend.

"Temperatures will struggle to rise above freezing across most of the country by day, with severe and penetrating frosts at night. Strong east to north-easterly winds will pick up across many areas later Friday, making it feel bitterly cold.

“Drifting snow will become an additional hazard over the weekend."

The freezing conditions are forecast to continue until at least the middle of the month with further snowfall expected, especially in the south and east.
