Gerling has come under increased pressure from one of its biggest customers to step up efforts to lift its credit rating.
Bayer has warned that it will not renew a big liability insurance package with Gerling unless the capital-stretched insurer's credit rating of BB+ improves to at least BBB by mid-July.
The warning comes a month after Gerling sold 90% of its business to a consortium led by Swiss Re.
