The General Insurance Standards Council (GISC) is keen to meet Independent Insurance's liquidators Pricewaterhousecoopers (PWC).

GISC spokeswoman Catherine Nicol said, as Independent has been a GISC member since April this year, the GISC would like to discuss its situation.

“It would be proper and appropriate for us as the regulator to talk to them, if they can make the time when things have calmed down,” she said.

However, Nicol said the GISC was not responsible for overseeing Independent's financial ability to care for its customers.

“Our code says that customers should be dealt with fairly but that doesn't involve the financial or prudential perspective, just general service on individual policy matters, like prompt settlement of claims,” she said.
