What do retired insurance brokers do with their time? Well, one has been making quite a name for himself in royal circles by devoting six days a week for the past 24 years to compiling the daily routines of the Windsors.

Tim O'Donovan, 70, a devoted royalist and ex-insurance broker, keeps track of the comings and goings of our first family as recorded in the Court Circular.

He sends his results into newspapers each year.

For 2002, the busiest member of the family was the Duke of Edinburgh with 578 engagements, nearly a third of them lunches, dinners and receptions.

O'Donovan's attention to detail is exemplary and his interest in their habits was described "as for the most mundane reasons".

"I thought it would be interesting to find out how much the royal family do," O'Donovan was reported to have said. This man could have been an actuary.
