Hugh James Solicitors is to launch a before-the-event (BTE) legal expenses policy backed by Groupama.

The law firm plans to sell both commercial and individual policies to existing and new customers as part of a complete legal package.

Hugh James partner Hugh Price said: "The idea is to encourage clients to agree a retainer which comes complete with a legal expenses scheme.

"We will be offering customers and affinity partners a tailor-made package."

Price said Hugh James was also looking for a second insurer for the product.

The law firm, which recently launched its Streamline 21 fixed costs scheme, gained FSA accreditation at the end of March for a May launch.

Price said: "One on the reasons we are doing this is we see the future in BTE rather than [after-the-event]."
