One word can make all the difference

Lord Hunt’s call for us all to promote professionalism (Comment, 10 January) is to be welcomed, but it was disappointing to see the word ‘industry’ appear eight times in his article. Surely, in the context of his message, the words ‘business’ or ‘profession’ could have been used instead.

I accept that it is an easy word to use when talking in general terms, but its use does nothing to promote professionalism.

I wonder, for example, if the president of the Law Society refers to the legal industry rather than the legal profession. I suspect not.

If we are serious about wanting to be considered a profession by the wider world then we must think of ourselves that way first, and act accordingly. Perhaps Lord Hunt would like to kick-start a campaign?
