Legal & General (L&G) is developing a better claims system that can integrate with suppliers' systems and monitor claim cases.

L&G general insurance operation and systems director Peter Richmond said L&G has a claims system already in place, but the new system aims to enhance functionality.

"Claims are core to what we do and are important in controlling costs. We need to keep competitive," he said.

"The new system will allow Legal & General to be more precise with regards to types of claims and will help build up a knowledge base."

Richmond said the system will have a web front end, so bigger suppliers with their own systems can interface with L&G over the internet.

"Smaller suppliers might want to use our system, so we can provide that opportunity as well," he said.

The new system, which has yet to be named, will be launched early next year. It will initially be used by internal claims handlers until the web element goes live in the second and third quarters of next year.
