Private motor insurer Sabre has teamed up with telematics provider Wunelli to launch its first telematics product.

The launch of DriveSmart is the result of a four-year relationship between the two companies.  The product will operate on Wunelli’s fully automated platform, operated by software house OpenGI, which makes the product accessible from selected comparison sites as well as Sabre.

DriveSmart will collect data on driver behaviour via a smartphone app and telematics devices hard-wired to policyholders’ vehicles. The Drive Smart app will enable drivers to try out the policy before they buy.

Sabre underwriting director Patrick Swords said: “We are hugely excited at the potential for DriveSmart – not only to deliver cost-effective premiums to drivers but to support safer driving standards.

Try-before-you-buy app

“The ‘try before you buy’ app is an important part of the process of creating consumer confidence with the concept, helping them to understand the way that telematics works.”

Wunelli managing director Penny Searles said: “We have worked in partnership with Sabre since Wunelli’s launch in 2008 on various telematics panels. We are extremely pleased to be chosen again as their partner for such an important step in their growth.

“Sabre’s individual approach to underwriting suits telematics and it will be exciting to see Drive Smart in the market. The integration with the OpenGi software is vital to ensure automation and we are pleased to be working in partnership with OpenGI for this launch.”
