New commercial head spearheads drive into small businesses.

Marsh is set to target SME business in a drive spearheaded by Julie Page, the newly appointed head of its UK commercial practice.

The global broker will launch a nationwide recruitment drive for SME brokers as it looks to expand its market share.

It was unable to provide figures for how many brokers it plans to recruit or how big its target market share would be, but said both would be sizeable numbers.

Page said Marsh was ready to do battle with big national brokers and consolidators for SME business, and that it would use its independence as a selling point. She also said that Marsh believed there was a gap in the SME market for risk management advice.

Page said: “We are currently looking at our distribution channels and we will be making further announcements shortly.”

Marsh UK chief executive Martin South said: “During uncertain economic times, the highly fragmented SME market, which has historically been underserviced from an insurance standpoint, is increasingly looking for independent expertise and advice.”
