Alex Ley, co-founder and chief executive at Scrub AI, explains his firm’s entry to the Excellence in AI - Service Provider category

1. Why did you put yourselves forward for the category?

Because AI in insurance can only go as far as the data underneath it and that side still gets less attention than it should.

Agents and autonomous workflows are moving quickly and some of the tools emerging are really exciting.

Yet in many teams, the day still begins with someone getting a spreadsheet into a usable shape. We knew that problem from the inside long before Scrub existed, and six years on, the AI we built to solve it is used daily by leading insurance teams.

It may be the least glamorous part of insurance AI, but we’d argue it matters most.

2. What do you think makes your entry stand out and why should you win the award?

Over six years, we’ve built an understanding of insurance data that only comes with time.

We made deterministic AI the core of Scrub early on because getting a file right once isn’t enough.

Whether it’s understanding how a risk has changed at renewal or tracking a coverholder’s performance over time, teams need data they can compare and trust. That consistency is what makes better decisions possible.

Our specialist models have been shaped by millions of rows of insurance data and the expertise of those working with it daily. We’d like to think that shows in our clients, who are working faster and taking on more business.

3. What would winning this award mean to you and your firm?

When we started, data cleansing in the Lloyd’s market had changed very little over the years and asking teams to trust AI with something so fundamental was a big step.

Winning this category last year was a proud moment for us and another win would be a reminder of how far we’ve come, alongside the clients who took a chance on us early on.

There’s still plenty we want to do, particularly around making it easier for teams to get data into Scrub, so they can spend more time on the decisions that matter.
