Increased travel and airport bungles contribute to rise says insurer

Norwich Union recorded a 40% increase in delayed baggage in the first six months of 2007 compared to the previous year.

The UK’s largest insurer attributed the rise largely to mishandling of luggage by airlines and airports and the increased number of people travelling.

A spokesman commented that baggage is the third biggest area of claim, which includes the option of loss, theft or damage.

Last week, InsureandGo reported an 85% increase in claims it received for lost baggage, receiving 2,094 claims between January 2006 and June 2006 compared to 1,133 claims in the same period in 2007.

Norwich Union's 'Travel Insurance Uncovered’ report revealed that the insurer paid over £43.5 million on travel insurance claims last year.

Medical emergencies are in fact the biggest single cause of travel claims – over £23 million was paid out by Norwich Union for medical emergencies last year with the average claim totaling over £1,200.

In contrast, baggage accounted for 20% of last year’s claims and only 6% of costs.

The average claim for delayed baggage in the first six months of this year was £240.NU reports 40% increase in delayed baggage
