Man who sold Premierline to Allianz backs top athletes

Barrie Wells, who sold his Premierline business to Allianz, is spending £2m funding at least 15 of Britain’s most promising athletes for the 2012 Olympics, the Times reports.

They include:

  • Jessica Ennis, the world champion heptathlete
  • Liam Tancock, the world recordholder in the 50 metres backstroke.
  • Katarina Thompson, heptathlete from Halewood, Liverpool.

“A hand-written letter came through the post one day from Barrie saying he knew all about me and he wanted to help,” Thompson, 16, said.
