Lloyd's chief executive Nick Prettejohn has scotched rumours that he has resigned from the world's oldest insurer.

According to market sources, Prettejohn allegedly handed in his notice last week and would leave in January 2005. Lloyd's director of worldwide markets Julian James was said to be his heir apparent.

But a Lloyd's spokeswoman said: "There is no truth in the allegation. It is just complete garbage."
