Primary Insurance Group is developing an international travel insurance product aimed at foreign nationals who require medical and repatriation cover to obtain visas.

The group is in discussion with insurers who have the appropriate licences to operate abroad to develop a policy that could exploit the foreign market.

Primary managing director John Bibby said: "What we are looking to do is to provide a website that will allow people resident in countries around the world to buy travel insurance.

"In order to obtain a visa from many embassies you have to demonstrate you have travel insurance in place first with sufficient cover to repatriate you back home and pay for medical expenses."

Primary plans to work with embassies in a number of countries, such as Vietnam, to develop the scheme.
