Ratings agency A.M. Best has affirmed the financial strength rating of Royal & Sun Alliance (R&SA).

In the same action, the agency affirmed the "bbb" and "bbb" ratings of R&SA's subordinated debt. The compay's outlook was maintained to stable from negative.

The agency said the ratings reflect the "prospective maintenance of a very good capital base" supported by the disposal of several of its operations.

Highlighting its improving operating performance the agency said the company's business position in its key markets is excellent.

A spokesman said: "A.M. Best believes R&SA's revised strategy will enable it to focus its existing capital resources on growth in its key markets."
