Companies are being warned that the use of agency drivers could increase their fleet's risk profile by 400%.

New research by 'Risk Answers', has found that agency drivers are involved in four times as many accidents as employees. The study also highlighted that agency drivers are involved in more expensive accidents than employees.

Risk Answers director Jeremy Hay said: "A fleet with 5% of its vehicles driven by agency staff could expect these drivers to be accounting for 15%-20% of all incidents.

"There is no doubt that the risk profile of a company rises considerably with the recruitment of agency drivers, but fleets can take significant steps to stop this from occurring by putting in place a series of checks and procedures."

Risk Answers also urged businesses to re-think their pre-Christmas recruitment plans, to avoid over-reliance on agency drivers.
