The industry is already facing a bill of £100m for claims from the recent rioting, according to the Association of British Insurers (ABI).
Industry sources have predicted that the total cost of the riots so far could reach £500m.
However, insurers can claim back some of the costs from the government if the police or Home Secretary officially label the recent disruptions as a 'riot' under the Public Order Act 1986.
