Yorkshire broker Oughtred and Harrison is the final stages of sale talks with a potential buyer. It is understood the deal could be sealed imminently.

Industry sources have linked Smart & Cook as the frontrunner to buy the Hull-based broker, after a race with two other bidders.

Oughtred and Harrison has about 100 staff and generates premium income of about £25m.

It has seven offices dealing in commercial insurance in Chippenham, Clitheroe, Ludlow, Hull, Lincoln, Leeds and Grimsby, where it has an additional personal lines office.

The diverse family-owned group, dating back to 1919, also includes a tanker agency and a business that builds ambulance minibuses. The group employs about 250 people.

Oughtred and Harrison Insurance Broking has been up for sale for several months, after a rough period in which it lost a team from its Lincoln office and one from Hull to Smart & Cook.

A company spokesman said the sale would finance a major expansion for the group.

The 2025 Insurance Times Awards took place on the evening of Wednesday 3rd December in the iconic Great Room of London’s Grosvenor House.

Hosted by comedian and actor Tom Allen, 34 Gold, 23 Silver and 22 Bronze awards were handed out across an amazing 34 categories recognising brilliance and innovation right across the breadth of UK general insurance.
Many congratulations to all the worthy winners and as always, huge thanks to our sponsors for their support and our judges for their expertise.
