St Paul Travelers has denied rumours of a potential merger with Zurich Financial services.
Late last week, reports said that St Paul Travelers was in preliminary talks to merge with the Swiss insurer.
But St Paul Travelers has denied this.
In the statement, the insurer said it was departing from its corporate policy of avoiding "any comment on, or response to, market rumours or speculation".
It said it was clarifying that the reports were false, because of the "factual and definitive manner in which these reports were made, both nationally and internationally".
