JLT has overtaken Marsh and Willis to seize the second spot in the Insurance Times Top 50 Brokers.

The listed broker has seen its brokerage soar by 17% to £608m in the past year, putting it second only to Aon at £640m.

It has broken the order of the top three – Aon, Marsh and Willis – for the first time in three years. Marsh’s brokerage came in at £603m, down 19.5% year-on-year, and Willis’s £582m, up 8%.

Olly Laughton-Scott, managing director of IMAS, which provides that data for the Top 50, said: “JLT has combined strong organic growth with selected acquisitions to achieve this. JLT has focused on what it can do well but is no one trick pony. It has long been building up its employee benefits operations, successfully foster [managing agency] Thistle and has invested selectively on the internet.”

The Insurance Times Top 50 Brokers will be published on September 1.
