Up to 60% of claims are not genuine

Car accident whiplash

Experts have told the transport select committee that whiplash injuries can be received from accidents that occur at only 6mph, reports The Guardian.

The committee investigating the cost and number of whiplash claims also heard that 10% to 60% of whiplash claims are exaggerated or fraudulent.

Lloyd’s Market Association manager David Powell told MPs that is was easy to make a whiplash claim because there was a “very low and easy medical threshold that claimants had to get over”.

Powell also said that accident victims came under immense pressure from claims management companies to claim, and that the average pay-out for a low-level whiplash claim was £2,500.
