The final part of our series. Amanda Swinburn teams up with technology consultant Ross Hall to assess which systems on the market are suitable for brokers

Sirius for Broking
Launched: August 2000

What was promised? A Windows-based end-to-end system for front and back office processes. Includes work management, accounting, claim and risk management, bespoke reporting, internet access, comparative quotations and scheme modules for niche markets.

Cost: Price on application

Access to insurance products: The system provides quotations for 69 insurers and 281 products.

Expert comment: "After a ropey start it seems to be getting there.

"The basics are in place for Sirius to become a strong player in the long run.

"However, rough edges mean a broker really needs to get out and meet with other users of the systems before making a commitment."

Company comment: Sirius systems managing director Kevin Child said: "It is 18 months since the launch and we have a substantial user base on a proven technology.

"It is tangible and there are businesses running their organisations on the product. Anyone is welcome to come and test-drive it."

Insureright
Launched: Not yet live, but there are 170 brokerages licensed to go live.

What was promised? A complete system that will act as a link between brokers' websites and the internet.

This is a tool box, which will set up and maintain all the technical systems and support services to allow customers to buy insurance online.

Cost: £3,500

Access to insurance products: Will go live with six to eight motor insurers, but there are several other products, including household, on the drawing board.

Expert comment: "This is really an unknown quantity as public demonstrations seem to have been few and far between. I would suggest any brokers that have it on their list of potential systems go through a thorough review before signing any contracts."

Company comment: Insureright director Andrew Paddick said: "Insureright is the only system that offers business to consumer and that is what the internet is all about.

"For brokers to develop anything like this themselves, it would cost about £1m."
