Current chief executive Andrew Carrier will move into an executive officer role, with the new appointee assuming leadership of the (re)insurer in 2026

Global Lloyd’s (re)insurer MS Amlin, part of Japan-based Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance (MSI) Group, has appointed Brit chief underwriting officer Christiern Dart as its new chief executive, to replace retiring leader Andrew Carrier.

Dart is set to assume the firm’s leadership in January 2026, subject to regulatory approval.

Dart has spent the past 17 years working at insurer Brit, with the last five years of his tenure acting as group chief underwriting officer. This role saw him manage more than £2bn of underwriting capacity across a multiline portfolio.

During his service at Brit, Dart additionally held roles such as deputy active underwriter for Syndicate 2987 and active underwriter for Syndicate 2987 and 2988. He also gained experience underwriting for the firm’s North American property and casualty (P&C) portfolio.

Dart first started his underwriting career in 1994 and has previously worked at firms such as Liberty Syndicates and CNA Re.

Shinichiro Funabiki, president and chief executive at MIS, said: “I am delighted to announce Dart’s appointment as MS Amlin’s new chief executive.

“His leadership and strategic approach at Brit clearly demonstrate his talent and I speak for the board and the broader executive team in MSI when I say how excited I am for him to start his new role with us and take the company to the next stage of its development.”

Dart added: “I’m so excited to make the move to MS Amlin and to continue the excellent work of the entire business.

“MS Amlin is such a well respected name in the market and with the unmatched support of MSI and the wider MS&AD group, I know exciting opportunities and times lie ahead for us all.”

Underwriting discipline

Dart is succeeding Andrew Carrier, who has led MS Amlin for the past three years after initially starting at the firm in 2020 as its chief underwriting officer.

Carrier, who is retiring, will still hold an executive officer position next year as part of the wider MSI group, enabling him to provide counsel and insight to the (re)insurer’s executive team as needed, to support the company’s operational and international expansion ambitions.

Meanwhile, he will remain in his current position for the rest of 2025, to facilitate a handover process.

Funabiki said: “I must take this opportunity to thank Carrier for everything he has achieved during his tenure with us. He brought a renewed underwriting discipline to the business that has left such a positive mark on our company consciousness that his presence will be felt long after he moves into his new role as executive officer for MSI.

“In this new role, we know Carrier’s deep professional expertise, along with his sincerity, honesty and genuine compassion, will continue to bring value that is rare in today’s world.

“We look forward to seeing him thrive in this next chapter of his career with us.”
