Insurer's challenge relating to Sunderland footballer is successful

Allianz has successfully challenged a court judgement relating to a credit hire claim involving Sunderland and England footballer Darren Bent and Accident Exchange.

The striker was involved in a road traffic accident in February when his Mercedes CLS Coupe was damaged by an Allianz policyholder.

Following the collision, Bent was referred to credit hire firm Accident Exchange and hired an Aston Martin DB9 for 94 days.

Allianz challenged the period of hire, the rate claimed and the need for the hire in the Court of Appeal. The judgement was handed down by His Honour Judge Yelton of Cambridge County County Court.

The insurer said the appeal was led by Mark Turner QC "before a strong Court of Appeal bench."

Allianz Insurance motor and casualty claims manager Martin Saunders said: "We are now looking forward to the detail of judgement so it can be analysed and the approach tailored accordingly."

Accident Exchange identified the case as one of thousands at the centre of its wider dispute with Autofocus.
