AXA research shows 40% will be away from their homes in royal wedding period

AXA Personal Lines Insurance has predicted a surge in burglaries and accidental damage insurance claims during the royal wedding period.

AXA research reveals that over 40% of the population will be away from our homes for the wedding, while a further 21% will host parties with friends and families.

Statistics from the insurer show that burglars ramp up thefts when people are likely to be away from home.

Theft and attempted theft surged by up to 50% on days such as Halloween, Bonfire Night and New Year’s Eve.

AXA warns that partying at home also carries risks, with 65% of people leaving patio or other entrances to the property open when they are hosting an event.

AXA is also bracing for accidental damage claims. The insurer's research shows that the average level of accidents in the home rises by 12% during social gatherings such as Christmas and New Year’s Eve.

AXA Personal Lines home insurance underwriting manager James Barclay said: “We don’t want to pour cold water on everybody’s fun but people need to be aware of the risks before their holiday or party turns into an expensive claim. Don’t let the royal wedding turn into a right royal mess for you.”
