Biba has issued a warning to motorists who are driving around believing they are insured but are not.
Some insurers have cancelled the 14-day 'grace period' during which drivers can renew their insurance.
Biba said other insurers are set to follow, but many motorists are unaware of the move.
New regulations, it said, means that insurers need to comply with the motor insurance database (MID) and, as such, the ‘days of grace' period has been cancelled.
Biba welcomed the removal of the 14-day grace period which, it said, would improve the MID's effectiveness in combating uninsured drivers.
