Broker Simon Bolam and Standard Life’s Crombie honoured

Former Biba chairman and CII president Simon Bolam has been awarded an MBE in the Queen’s New Year Honours List for services to the insurance industry.

Standard Life’s chief executive Sandy Crombie was knighted in a list that featured few figures from the financial services sector after a year of turmoil and banking collapses.

Bolam ran broker EH Ranson in Edinburgh from 1971, recently passing on the day-to-day management to his daughter Valerie McIntee.

Bolam told Insurance Times: “I was very surprised and highly delighted. It is not often that the insurance industry gets recognised at any level, and especially in the current financial circumstances, so I am delighted.”

McIntee, who only found out herself this morning, also told Insurance Times she was “thrilled”.

Nobody from Biba was available this morning.

The 2025 Insurance Times Awards took place on the evening of Wednesday 3rd December in the iconic Great Room of London’s Grosvenor House.

Hosted by comedian and actor Tom Allen, 34 Gold, 23 Silver and 22 Bronze awards were handed out across an amazing 34 categories recognising brilliance and innovation right across the breadth of UK general insurance.
Many congratulations to all the worthy winners and as always, huge thanks to our sponsors for their support and our judges for their expertise.
