Catlin chief executive believes new chairman should come from industry coalface

Chief executive of LIoyd’s insurer Catlin Stephen Catlin has called for the new LIoyd’s chairman to be someone with experience from the industry’s "coalface".

The search for a new Lloyd’s chairman to replace Lord Levene is at an early stage, according to the Financial Times.

Names floated as potential chairmen have included Jacques Agrain, former chief of Swiss Re, and Lord Myners who has held roles in finance and Government. Other names include John Varley, outgoing chief of Barclays, and Ron Sandler, who was once Lloyd’s chief executive.

“We do need to get the right person for the role of chairman,” said Mr Catlin. “But my strong preference is that one of the chairmen or the chief executive has industry coalface experience.”

The 2025 Insurance Times Awards took place on the evening of Wednesday 3rd December in the iconic Great Room of London’s Grosvenor House.
