CII replaces annual conference with one-day events

As part of its root and branch modernisation programme, the CII will replace its long-standing annual conference with a series of one-day events designed to target the specific concerns of faculty members.

Issues such as the blurring lines between underwriting and broking will be the focus of its first the 21st Century Underwriting & Distribution Event on 10 July.

A key feature of this event will be the Big Debate, where participants will discuss just how far brokers can go with underwriting.

Fortis chief executive Barry Smith will also examine the consequences of the shifting dynamics in the relationship between underwriting and broking during the day.

The new format roll-out will continue on 12 July with the Future of Claims Event, which is hosted by the claims faculty.

Starting the day will be Groupama claims director Graham Gibson who will provide an insight into the conclusions of a major piece of market research conducted by the faculty.

Visitors will also be able to listen to Lloyd’s consultant John O’Neil,l who will supply a financial perspective in a seminar looking at the numbers behind the front end operation.

In addition, the second Big Debate, chaired by Lord Hunt, will tackle the issue of claimant expectations and assess whether the current process is fair, effective and equitable.

Rounding off the event Mark Boleat, head of claims management regulation for the Ministry of Justice, will give a closing speech on the future of claims management regulation.

Commenting on the launch of the new annual events, CII director general Sandy Scott said: “This fresh approach is unashamedly part of the modernisation of the CII which is both well-known and ongoing.

"It was the growth of CII membership among the traditional general insurance, the life and pensions markets and from new areas that prompted this more bespoke approach.

“The CII represents a broad and diverse church encompassing the full range of specialisms within insurance, all of which have their own areas of interest and concern.

"In order to meaningfully cater for this breadth of membership a series of one day events was selected as this allows greater scope and flexibility for a more targeted approach. In this format a greater focus can be dedicated to topical issues affecting members of specific faculties.

“It was a bold step to discontinue the CII conference, but times have moved on.

"The new one-day events certainly deliver a more appropriate format to cater for our members’ requirements.”

Full event details can be viewed by accessing www.cii.co.uk and then selecting general insurance, then news and events.

"Delegates can also reserve their place via the website. The new events add to the CII's existing programme of road shows, master classes, technical seminars, regional meetings and the leaders’ forum.
